Background of the Study

Small and Medium Enterprises (SMEs) contribute significantly to Nigeria's economy, representing a vital component of job creation, innovation, and economic development (Afolabi & Eze, 2023). Proper accounting practices are fundamental to the growth and sustainability of these enterprises, ensuring financial transparency, access to funding, and compliance with regulations. However, many Nigerian SMEs, particularly in Delta State, struggle with maintaining proper accounting due to limited resources, financial illiteracy, and inadequate support systems (Okoro & Ibekwe, 2024).
Government incentives such as tax breaks, subsidies, and training programs can play a pivotal role in fostering proper accounting practices. These incentives not only reduce the financial burden on SMEs but also provide the necessary tools and knowledge to enhance financial management. This study investigates the effectiveness of government incentives in encouraging proper accounting practices among SMEs in Delta State.

Statement of the Problem

Despite the availability of government incentives, many SMEs in Delta State continue to exhibit poor accounting practices. Challenges such as inadequate awareness, mismanagement of resources, and limited access to incentives hinder their effectiveness. This results in financial mismanagement, reduced access to credit facilities, and eventual business failure (Ogunleye & Adebayo, 2023).
The lack of research on how government incentives directly impact accounting practices among SMEs in Delta State creates a knowledge gap that this study aims to address, providing actionable insights for policymakers and business owners.

Objectives of the Study

  1. To analyze the effectiveness of government incentives in promoting proper accounting practices among SMEs in Delta State.

  2. To identify barriers hindering the utilization of government incentives by SMEs.

  3. To propose strategies for optimizing the impact of government incentives on accounting practices.

Research Questions

  1. How effective are government incentives in promoting proper accounting practices among SMEs in Delta State?

  2. What barriers hinder SMEs from utilizing government incentives for accounting improvements?

  3. What strategies can enhance the effectiveness of government incentives in promoting accounting practices?

Research Hypotheses

  1. Government incentives have no significant impact on accounting practices among SMEs in Delta State.

  2. Barriers to utilizing government incentives do not significantly affect SME accounting practices.

  3. Proposed strategies do not significantly enhance the effectiveness of government incentives in promoting accounting practices.

Scope and Limitations of the Study

This study focuses on SMEs in Delta State and their utilization of government incentives for improving accounting practices. Limitations include potential bias in respondents’ self-reported data and the variability in incentive accessibility across industries.
